Lyrics

Lyrics for a new song:

Your broken promises fell like flies,
Now I'm sitting here alone watching "Days of our Lives"
You know they say that soap operas are for the sad and unemployed.
But I work, yeah I earn my keep,
Selling my soul forty hours a week.
And I'm not really that sad, I'm just annoyed.

Shootin' Stars

It was gorgeous outside this morning, so I went outside and wrote this song. I then came back inside and recorded it in my hot apartment. And here it is for you to listen to:
Discover Simple, Private Sharing at Drop.io

Lyrics:
Every time you close your eyes,
I see another shooting star fly by,
But you'll never see them, and we'll never fall in love,
'Cause all my wishes are pinned on the stars above,
And they are falling faster than you can see,
'Cause your eyes are closed shut tight for me.

So I'll grab my rifle and my scope,
Point them up at the sky and hope,
That I can shoot a star down for you,
And that all of our crazy dreams will come true,
We can be anything we want to be,
With your eyes closed shut tight for me.

Hammer Song

I call this song hammer song, because it reminds me of a chain gang working on a railroad track.

Week 22: Untitled

This song doesn't have a name yet, but I feel like it will get one eventually. I'll go ahead and type out the lyrics for this one because I made up a lot of the words as I was going, and it is noticeable. I'll rerecord it someday. Until then, here it is:

Discover Simple, Private Sharing at Drop.io

Lyrics:

Well, your heart is half empty but your glass is half full.
The liquor seems to help, why not have another pull.
But your heart it still aches and your glass now is drained.
You drove off all your friends why the hell'd I remain?
For You

Well I don't understand all my little quirks, the things I do, the dirty looks.
And I don't understand you when we're alone, pickup your life and put down your phone.
For Me.

Thanks For Listening,
Robby

Week 16: Last Place

I formally apologize for missing last week, I was not feeling at all creative, but I am back with vengeance this week and I pledge to make up for last week. But first things first, this weeks song is called "Last Place" and its not about winning:

Week 14: The Last Goodbye

Yes, I know just by the name the song already sounds like a mediocre chick flick. And I feel the song deserves the title, it is corny and sappy and has a bit of a pop sound to it, but I like it anyways. The Last Goodbye:

Lyrics:

You wrote a love song and you said it was for me.
You've written thirty others with the exact same melody.

I wrote you a poem, actually I just changed some words.
It was by Poe, you said you like it it was absurd.

Week 7

I am sorry if this song doesn't seem to have a lot of effort put into it. I almost didn't make it this week, been sick and busy. Lots of ideas bouncing around right now but this song wasn't really one of them. But here is what happened today:

Week 6

I made this song using just my keyboard, sampling a sermon by my sister. It is called "A study of growing confidence":

Week 5

This song was a major collaborative effort I was at band practice and I started playing a riff and said lets write a song, and Jack and Brandt just started spitting out some lyrics; this is what happened:

Lyrics:

I sleep in boxcars to keep out of the rain
Got a fifth of whisky to wash away my pain
Don't know where I'm going, but I'll get there all the same
I'm a rambling man

Born in West Virginia, a town built on coal
The men went down the mines each day, and dug right through their souls

I haven't eaten, since yesterday at noon
I grabbed all I could hold and ran out of the saloon
My guitars my only friend and we howl at the moon
I'm a rambling man

Born in West Virginia, a town built on coal
I packed up all my things, and tied them to a pole

I wandered for years, with my things in a pack
I left my home town, and never looked back
They found my body, by the railroad track
I'm a rambling man

Week 4

I guess this is my last song of the month, just 11 more months to go. This week I did a short a capella track. I recorded three vocal backup parts in the order that they appear in the song, then I toyed around with a bass line and ended up dropping it out of the song. I then recorded the melody track then the "drums" and finally I recorded the chorus in four tracks. Here is the song:

Discover Simple, Private Sharing at Drop.io

Lyrics:
Don't you know that wheel will keep on turning, no matter what you do to try and stop it.
Don't you know our flame will keep on burning, no matter how the world turns.

Free your mind, and open your eyes.
To what is actually happening, and the world will always be ours.

Week 3

This weeks song is the first song I have written for my new band. My friend and fellow band mate, Brandt, plays mandolin on it. This song was written over two sittings, the verse was written at my apartment, and the chorus was improvised for the first time practicing with my band, so here it is. Johnny Bad Seed:

Discover Simple, Private Sharing at Drop.io

Lyrics:
Please forgive me for I have sinned
It wasn't the first time and it sure won't be the last.
I have done some pretty terrible things in my past.
I walked in the shoes of saints but they don't fit me well.
So I'll continue driving this steam engine right through the gates of hell.
Better Hide your liquor, Johnny bad seeds in town.
Lock your daughters up, grab your guns, we ain't here to mess around.

No Name #1

I don't have a whole lot to say about this one, I wrote this little finger picked riff I liked and toyed around with it until I got something I really liked. The vocals and lyrics are improvised and the soloing is improvised around a theme.

details

Ok, so this is my first song post, the song is called "details". I started this song with the guitar and then wrote the melody and lyrics together. I was taking with a friend on the phone and saying that I needed to work on my first song for this blog and I started fiddling around with a C chord on my guitar and a rhythm progression started to emerge. I got off the phone and ran with it and got the chords figured out. Then I started thinking about lyrics, a couple of days ago I started toying with the line "life is lived in the details" and that turned into the chorus. The rest of the lyrics, along with the melody were written while playing the song. I recorded it on one track in one take using my internal mic. I usually take a lot more time tweaking songs but I thought the lo-fi sound really worked with this song. The whole process started a little under an hour ago, so this song came out pretty quick. I have talked enough about it and if you are still reading and even if you aren't, here it is.

Lyrics:

I may not have a lot of money,
I may not have many dreams.
My life may seem boring,
but it is better than it seems.

Because I know that I can hear the ocean in seashells.
Because I know life's lived in these tiny details.

I may not have your smile,
I may not have your look.
I may not have your brain,
and I may not understand all of your books.

But I know that I can hear the ocean in seashells.
And I know life's lived in these tiny details.

First Post

I am going to try and write one song a week for the entire year of 2010. On this blog I am going to document the writing process of each individual song. I will make each song available as I complete it.
